SURPRISE

This sprawling Phoenix suburb is one of Arizona’s 10 largest cities, but it also boasts some of the lowest property taxes in the state and was ranked the 8th safest city in the U.S. amongst cities of similar size. It should come as no surprise, then, that Surprise is pretty popular!

Because of its size, there are housing options for nearly any budget. Moderately priced townhomes, starter homes, and condos are available for young families or budding professionals on a budget. And at the opposite end of the scale, you’ll find neighborhoods like Park Place, a luxury condo complex offering its residents a business center, clubhouse, dog run, and several other private, posh amenities.

When it comes to single-family homes, the possibilities are endless. Marley Park, for example, is a master-planned community that prides itself on offering homes that aren’t ‘cookie-cutter’. Here, you’ll find 1 and 2-story homes with a timeless look and lush, green yards. The focal point of this neighborhood is the 6,000 sq. ft. indoor/outdoor Heritage Campus which houses the pool, clubhouse, and park. Asante is another local favorite. This community offers a plethora of sports parks, including a soccer field, basketball court, and baseball fields, all pristinely maintained.

Speaking of sports, Surprise is a sports-lovers dream come true. The Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers visit every spring for training camp. And when the state-of-the-art training facility isn’t being used by the pros, the locals can enjoy it for free movie nights in the park, 4th of July festivities, concerts, and more. The surprise is also host to the annual Surprise Tennis Championship at the Surprise Tennis and Racquetball Complex. Residents can also enjoy this professional facility – when the pros aren’t using it, of course!

Of course, no Arizona city would be complete without at least a few golf courses. Surprise! Surprise has at least 7 full-sized golf courses. Most of them are public but maintained like a private course. For those who like things a little more exclusive, there are several private courses, including the esteemed Pebblebrook.

Outdoor enthusiasts feel right at home in Surprise, too. Most of the communities include greenbelts and walkways that are always bustling with joggers, walkers, and bikers. Many residents can even walk or bike to work. For a little bit more adventure, you can head to White Tanks Mountain Regional Park, which is just a few minutes away from the heart of the city. Here, you can mountain bike, rent an ATV, or hike the ridges and canyons while you try to catch a peek at the local desert wildlife.

One of the Surprises’ most surprising features is the Sustainable Surprise program. This eco-friendly program offers free classes to community residents on recycling, upcycling, water conservation, and sustainable landscaping. The program has been popular since its inception and is expected to grow.
